A Simple Thing.

I could not get going today.  Just couldn't find any motivation.  I usually get the girls to school, go work out, work at the gallery for a bit, come home and work here, do a little cleaning, drink a little coffee (a lot of coffee) and then grab the gals from school for some down time at home.

During the 6 hours they are at school, I'm a machine.  I'm all over the place and I am super productive, sister!

Not today.  I was a little down, a little under the weather, a little cranky.

I worked in my studio all day yesterday and couldn't bear to go back in there so I  decided to get some errands run.   I ran to staples, dropped stuff off at the gallery and fixed 2 broken doors (with my handy dandy power tools!) and then browsed the aisles at Whole Foods.  I'm a nerd.  I love that place.  I just LOVE finding good food.

Oh!  I also got my new iphone 6 activated.
People.   It's glorious.

But, I digress.

Then it was time to grab the girls at school.  Sigh.......free time is over.  Gotta occupy them.  Gotta get homework done.  Gotta make snacks and dinner.

Before, when I was at Whole Foods, I found out that a grain called Sorgum could be popped like popcorn.  So,  I bought some and figured I'd give it a go.  I didn't have high hopes.  Mostly because I still felt down and cranky and was really just doing this to pass the time.

Then, something unexpected.  Apparently, you have to have a lid on your pot to contain whatever is popping inside of it!!  Molly, my sweet little corn-allergic, lactose intolerant child came to see what was popping all over the kitchen.  Those little kernals were flying everywhere!!

Noone knew where the lid was so we just watched in disbelief and started dying laughing.  Apparently, this stuff really does pop!  And it's so stinking cute.  It looks like barbie doll popcorn.  You want to pet it.

Molly was at a loss for words thinking that perhaps she could possibly have something 'popcorn-esque' to snack on.  I told her if it turned out well, she could eat it but not to get her hopes up since most of what I whip up for her to try ends up tasting like garbage and gets tossed there.

But!!!   People......this was success.  We finally found the pot lid and both girls sat and watched that sorgum pop with super excitement.  I added some ghee and salt and it was glorious.  Crunchy.....but glorious.  The girls then talked me into making 3 batches of it.  And they downed it.  I finally had to cut them off.

Molly stopped me in my tracks.  I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to see her so excited about popped sorgum!

It sounds silly but I watched this kid be miserable and sick for months.  I watched her mourn and rage about each food group we had to take out of her diet to help her heal.  I watched her stop eating for a time because she was afraid she'd throw up.  And, I've watched her watch other people eat and enjoy what she cannot while she pretends it doesn't bother her........she usually takes it in stride by trying to be a good sport.  But, being only 9 and trying to be aloof when everyone else is noshing on foods you used to enjoy is hard.  And it's been very painful for Kevin and I to watch.  She's amazing.  (She REALLY is amazing, by the way.  She loves eating healthy now and is, literally, the least sick person I know!  She has returned to being an absolute bottomless pit.)

So seeing her laugh and get so excited watching the sorgum pop and then downing 3 bowls of it?  That was pure heaven.  It was the highlight of my week.  My month.  It turned my whole day around.

A simple thing. Sometimes it's just one little thing that turns an entire day around.  And sweet Molly did that for me today.  Molly and a whole potload of popped sorgum all over my floors and counters and even a little on the walls.

Oh.....and fresh off my popped sorgum success,  I tried my hand at grinding my own buckwheat and making porridge.  Yummo, right??  Well......if you stuck a fork in it, you could pick up the whole pot.  Tasted like puke.

There truly is something to be said for stopping when you are ahead.

Good night.
